All In London Review

Haggerston Espresso Room offers good coffee, extra fine toast and more.

AKA, BYOB, LOL… who doesn’t love an acronym in their life? In fact, I just got back from getting YOLO inked across my right knuckles; such is the meme’s unrelenting longevity in my world. That’s why I had to visit HER or Haggerston Espresso Room quick sharp. I haven’t consumed in a place named with an acronym since the halcyon days of ICE in Tonbridge. And yes, it really was an Intense Clubbing Experience. But moving on…

Located just off Kingsland Road, HER is a coffee house in the ‘Hackney freelancers’ office’ mold. That is to say, it is a stylish kind of a place that encourages a whole load of laptop workers from morning till noon. Which is fine by me because if it weren’t for the long tables, comfortable sofas, mid-century modern furniture and glowy dangling light bulbs of HER we’d all be stuck at home procrastinating. Like Snoop said, ‘freelancin’ ain’t easy’.

The coffee comes from a classic La Marzocco espresso machine, soft drinks fill a few fridges behind the counter and the sandwiches mean exciting fillings between artisan sour dough bread. I took the toast and a fine choice it was. The wide array of spreads on the tables is a great touch, which makes the act of eating toast anywhere but home acceptable. Nutella, lemon curd, Marmite, peanut butter, marmalade and multiple jams created a different kind of procrastination to contemplate. Should I go for something I know I love or should I opt for something I don’t have in the cupboard at home? Choices.

HER has a young, hip clientele; just don’t mistake it for somewhere you won’t get a smile with your coffee. You will, because it’s friendly. And that’s why – that and the toast – it’s a coffee house worth checking out. Why not? YOLO.

Nice enough place to hang out in, but the girl on the cashier was just bad. A bad egg. Surly and unknowledgable. Really, if you serve fancy tea, learn what's behind the fancy names. If you dont know, how the hell should i know what 'Ivory' is. But for God's sake don't make it up. (I'm allergic to some ingredients, which I was given in my tea, despite my requests). And there's no need to be so surly. We can all get great coffee with great service and good vibes in so many other places. Shame she was so off because the male barista was sweet. I won't be going back anytime soon.
