All In London Review

Australian influenced brunch spot with a stunning garden

Review Image
Three branches across South London make up the Brickwood family and on a sunny Wednesday morning we opt for the Clapham branch as we head south of the river to indulge our antipodean coffeehouse urge. Located opposite Clapham Junction Tube, the café is painted a floral green on the outside, a taste of the pastoral theme that extends inside. If you’ve never been to Brickwood, you can probably picture it without needing too much description from us. It sticks to the exposed brick, rustic wood, copper pipe and dangling low filament light bulb look to a tee – not that we’re complaining. If you want originality you can look to the ceiling where you’ll find hessian coffee sacks covering the surface, reminding you that the beans roasted to make that delicious cappuccino in front of you came from somewhere far away – which we like.

What we like even more than Brickwood’s coffee sack ceiling is Brickwood’s garden, an absolute bucolic gem in urban Clapham. Coffee here comes from Caravan, tea from Bluebird and all bread and pastries are baked fresh each morning. Since we’re all hip and of the moment, we eat the smashed avocado, chorizo and poached eggs on sourdough and find one of the best versions of this ubiquitous classic that we’ve had in a long time. The menu doesn’t stray too far from Australian influenced brunchy classics and it doesn’t really need to – we’ll be back for the corn fritters with halloumi, beetroot and crème fraiche.

Our brunch for two comes in at £30 with coffees and service and feels like money well spent.
