Climpson and Sons is the first word in coffee when it comes to Broadway Market. Before the crowds arrived, before coffee got really big, it was here on a still relatively quiet patch of East London. For Climpson’s, not a lot has changed except for the fact there are a few more competitors around these days.
The shop front remains the same as it has done since it arrived, the chunky wooden benches and tables look as hip as ever and the same relaxed approach to coffee remains. What Climpson’s does, it does well. Using its own roasted blend, the café serves through a La Marzocco machine using Mazzer Robur grinders. While that might seem like a dose of unnecessary information to some, the coffee world is full of pedants who like to know the ins and outs of the process. At Climpson’s, it’s proper coffee.
The lively café also serves an array of cakes and sandwiches and if there’s a way of talking oneself out of matching a flat white with an almond croissant at Climpson’s, then I’m all ears.
Friendly isn’t always a word that comes naturally when weighing up the attraction of Broadway Market, which is where Climpson’s bucks the trend. Smile and the world smiles with you - Climpson’s is well worth the pounds for the quality of its coffee and that unswerving sunny disposition.
