I paid Newham Carpets to fit my flooring when I bought my house in 2007. While their quote was very competitive, their workmanship was less than adequate.
The existing flooring in the kitchen (where vinyl was to be laid) was covered with lumps and bumps and I felt that this would need removing and new, clean hardboard and underlay fitting so that the lumps and bumps didn't come through. Newham Carpets said it would be fine and I trusted their judgment. Since then I've realised that since they didn't charge separately for underlay, fitting and so on, their advice was based on corner-cutting and protecting their profit margins. The upshot is that now the vinyl in the kitchen is permanently damaged and unevenly worn where the lumps and bumps have shown through.
I was also worried about the edges of carpet fraying where it was joined to the vinyl and that the strings from the frayed carpet edges would then wrap around the spindle of the hoover (since I'd seen this happen with carpets in the past). Newham Carpets said that wouldn't happen and again, I trusted them. Now, of course, the carpets are frayed at the edges, with long strings coming away and wrapping around the hoover spindle, ruining both the carpet and the hoover.
To add insult to injury, at the shop when booking the job I was told it was fine to pay by credit card over the phone once the work was complete, however once the job was finished, the fitters insisted on cash. When I phoned the shop I was told that I must pay by cash because they needed it to pay their staff because it was Friday.
I was badly advised by Newham Carpets and would not trust their advice again. I certainly wouldn't recommend them to friends.
