All In London Review

The place for exotic ingredients, style magazines and some of the best pork buns in town

Review Image
When it’s finally time to try making all of those tricky Japanese recipes at home, the Japan Centre is the place to come. If, like us, you’ve spent ages walking around supermarkets bemoaning the lack of dashi, bonito flakes or some other exotic ingredient then the appeal of the Japan Centre is focused in its food aisles. Located at the Piccadilly Circus end of Shaftesbury Avenue, this palace of all things Japanese isn’t your average asian supermarket; this is a day out. Think IKEA with food aisles instead of furniture and sushi instead of meatballs.

Aside from the huge range of Japanese (and some Korean) ingredients available, there is a range of homeware and hardware likely to capture the fancy of even the most casual fan of Japanese culture. Hard to find fashion and style magazines are another bonus. But, perhaps the best thing about the Japan Centre is the small bbq pork stand at the entrance, which continuously dishes out some of the best Hirata buns in London. Think bbq pork, cucumber and Siracha mayo piled into a soft, moist bun. Quite literally (yes, literally) the snack of our dreams.

Aside from the fine food, the rare ingredients, the magazines, the ramen bowls and the decorative chopsticks, the Japan Centre is a fun, novel place to visit. Even if you end up leaving with nothing - unlikely- the place will inspire you, whether you know your wabi sabi from your zen aesthetics or not.
