All In London Review

A whole menu devoted to grilled cheese

Review Image
The grilled cheese sandwich is no longer that simple snack we make to appease the midnight munchies. It's a New York favourite that's currently all the rage, with restaurants sprouting up offering all kinds of gourmet innovations. They are quite literally hot right now, so much that when we prize our toasties out of the bag at The Melt Room we burn our fingers, complete with oozing melted cheese dripping all over them.

This eatery is an unfussy takeout sort of place, although there is seating in case you've been wandering around Soho for hours. Their 'classic' melt is a pairing of three cheeses: Cheddar, Red Leicester, and Gruyere, which have gloriously fused into the bread. The 'pastrami' is almost a melted version of a New York deli sandwich, with mushrooms, a delicate smear of horseradish, a blend of Red Leicester and Cheddar and the famous Jewish cured beef. It's definitely worth getting the fries - the cheesy ones are good, but particularly dangerous are the truffle fries, infused into the cheesy, drizzly sauce.

There are specials like the 'salted beef' and 'El Mexican', with guacamole, bacon, peppers and salsa. At the time of writing they also had limited editions like fish and chip sarnies with fish fingers, fries and tartare sauce, and if we went for breakfast we'd order the 'Benedict melt' which stuffs in ham, scrambled eggs, Hollandaise and Cheddar.

Desserts include Maltesers and cream and a peanut butter jelly melt. It's also fully licensed, stocking Heineken by the can, and wine and prosecco by the glass or bottle.
