New Government Internet Surveillance Bill

It's been announced today that internet firms will have to store data on what people access online for a year, under new surveillance law plans.

But at the same time, ministers are proposing senior judges will have unprecedented powers to block operations to intercept communications.

The plans would mean that firms are obliged to hold a schedule of which websites you visit and the apps you use on all devices from computers, smartphones and tablets. This data would then be utilised by police and other agencies in pursuit of criminals but also utilised in different ways, perhaps to track down missing people.

The data passed on would consist of the basic domain address but not a full browsing history of pages or searches within that site. So, for example the government could access data showing that you've visited johnlewis.com but wouldn't be able to see that you had viewed individual pages about cooking knives.

So what does everyone think about these plans?
Do you feel it's justifiable in trying to tackle terrorists threats or is it an intrusion on your privacy?

I'm surprised this stuff isn't already logged somewhere to be honest. Given that it's not there must be a huge bill coming for the ISPs in warehousing all of this data and processing applications to see it.

Whilst it'll probably make some dodgy people think twice about doing bad things it'll probably also force them to find alternative ways to communicate which are very difficult to trace.

I heard Shami Chakrabarti on the news yesterday saying this is an infringement on liberty. But what difference does that make in real terms? Someone's listening/ watching? So what? Consider the alternative: some nutters blow up a plane or landmark and it was organised over Facebook or What's App for everyone to see and the security forces do nothing about it. "Well, we're not really allowed to be snooping on the web."
I'd rather a bit of snooping than the alternative.

yeh, similar to the people who moan about taking an extra 10 mins to get through airport security cos of all the extra checks. better you take an extra few minutes to get into duty free than your plane fall out of the sky.
