working in newham

I've been offered a job interview in a primary school in Newham... i don't know London at all and would have to move from Ireland for the job. I am just wondering how safe this area is to work in... apparently it is one of the most dangerous parts of London, and even the train and bus routes there have really high crime rates. I don't intend to live there, only work, but as a young woman who is unfamiliar with the city i don't want to feel unsafe coming in and out of work..? What is it really like, and do the statistics just exaggerate? Thanks for any answers you give!
