wow, yea. I'm glad i stumbled on this. Been after Ghosts of Oxford Street 4 years!. It does not exist in the world of file sharing (trust me). I lost my original video, well its in the loft. I could go round to the old house and ask the tenants if i could look for it but its been 18y ! lol
I SUCCESFULY FOUND 2 CLIPS TODAY -U-TUBE ! just type in 'Malcolm McLaren ghosts of Oxford' and youl get 2 clips. including basement/underground scene/shots AND a street address !!!
There are many other clues in just those 2 clips as well.
I can find out if there are tunnels there.
Comparing Oxford street to other cases i have dealt with i'd be very surprised if there weren't tunnels under Oxford street. I know some people who trawl the country investigating these things. Also i used to do it myself. Found many a tunnel. Having seen the film, clips today, your blog, etc. its all falling into place!

I start a new business this week, im busy for a month. After that i cant wait to get stuck into this little number.

Q-
Why wont c4 show the 'ghosts of Oxford street' again??
possible reasons-
Tunnels to be kept secret ?
Row with Malcom, he threatened to cut off his ear or something ?
C4 likes wasting money, burying art?
OR ... perhaps....
'The ghosts of Oxford street' may have been to revealing for a very powerful and wealthy family who's ancestor's were featured in the program !?? mmmm i wonder....

SOMEONE HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE DONT THEY C4.

In the mean time i would love for someone to get me a copy of the dvd.
Anyone ????

Im interested in anything todo with this-boks,maps,blueprints you name it.

Excellent post Universeman, welcome to the forum

Thanks, London is a professional and personal interest of mine. It seems that my post managed to kill the discussion, though.

Hello, I`ve searched for a copy of The Ghosts Of Oxford Street for many years. Can anybody please help me locate a copy.....email me please [email protected]

My claim to fame being underground in London is I was picked to place a personal item in a time capsule under Wembley Stadiums centre circle.

I saw the Christmas programme about this and contacted the archive department at Selfridges. I received this reply:

"Thank you for your email. The History of Advertising Trust works independently on Selfridge’s behalf and we regularly get enquiries about an old street under the store, but we have no evidence of its existence. I have certainly heard of streets and shops under Oxford Street and there is some speculation on the internet about the subject. The old Lilley and Skinner shoe shop at 360 Oxford Street, now the new HMV store, seems to be a possible location. I would be very interested to get the name of the television programme you mention so I can check the details for future reference!

The store was built on the site of existing properties on Oxford Street and surrounding streets, which were acquired by Mr Selfridge during the early years of the store’s expansion. Basements and sub basements were excavated to a great depth and in the archive we have plans, drawings and photographs of various construction phases. Before the First World War there were plans to build a subway under Oxford Street to link the main store with a new property on the other side of the road, but this never came to fruition.

I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I hope this goes some way to answering your question."

So, it doesn't look too hopeful.

Although I dismissed claims of a hidden street a few posts back, even I couldn't resist doing some checking. Amongst my research, I happened to come across this interesting reference in E.B. Chancellor's The West End of Yesterday and Today of 1926. When discussing Oxford Street, he notes:

'Even in that great thoroughfare whose name seduced Wordsworth into penning what is perhaps the most banal line in all the vast bulk of British verse - "the street from which Oxford has borrowed its name" - rebuilt as it is, flashy and tawdry as so much of it appears today, history and legend lie beneath but a superficial integument of commerce.'

This is so interesting. Is there some kind of [Edited: Link removed] London Tour of it?
Cheers
