Just watched a Morrison advert on the box with Nick "They think my career is all over... it is now" Hancock talking about how he likes his fish... he wants it fresh, he wants it freshly cut, he wants to know where it was caught and... he wants to know how it was caught!? And then it pans to a shot of a makerel with a label that says: Makerel; North Atlantic; Line Caught Confused

I've never once been to a fish mongers or supermarket, seen bit of fish, just been on the verge of buying but then asked "my good man... do you know how this black bream was caught? ... because unless it was caught by a 12-year old fijian with a snorkel and a spear then I'm just not interested."

Does anyone else give a shite how their fish was killed?

Well looks like they're just responding to an issue at the moment about the fact that a lot of fish we're eating is not coming from sustainable sources, and we will end up killing off many species of fish. So... Yeah, I think it is important for people to know where exactly their food is coming from. I'm not saying I'm perfect and do everything I can to be environmentally friendly, but ignorance is not a good excuse to be destroying the world and causing extinction for the sake of a cheap tin of tuna.

No probs :)

So would you buy something that said "sea bass; net caught; south Atlantic" on a label?

Could you assimilate that information? Would that be enough for you to decide whether the species was at risk in that area of the ocean? And would it impact on your decision to buy? (Assuming you like sea bass:))

... and the populous' reaction to "net catching" is that it's destructive - when in actual fact it's now harder policed than any other means of catching.

Sorry it sounds like I'm being confrontational, it's not meant to be. I was only p*ssing about in the first post, but you raised a serious point in that if the supermarket is trying to be right-on by addressing these issues then it's not making any difference - the information isn't in any context so it's useless.

Does the layman have any idea about which species are in danger? From which areas? And what are the most destructive fishing practises to a fish population? I bet the man on the street hasn't got a clue. So why do they tell us?

Is true though, I don't know where it's 'good' to have your fish from and if they use a net or not, what really is the difference? Like you say there's no context, they might as well put on a sea bass label 'name: Bert likes: music and art' for all the good that kind of labelling does. I guess because they're using different wording on the front, people will assume they are helping with no real research into it.

I heard a lady who walked past a coffe place go 'look, £1 for a cup of coffee' take a second look and then say, disappointed 'oh, it's fair trade'(!) I think people just aren't 'up' on what all these things actually mean. Myself included.

I don't eat fish much anyway. Lol

Ah I don't care about eating all the horrible bits mashed together in a burger or something, if anything that's not being wasteful. But when we're killing off a whole species when we really don't have to be, then it bothers me. By no means am I a vegetarian, I think people need to start giving back for what we take from the world before we completely screw up.
