Moving to London Docklands

Hello....I'm moving down to London in 2 weeks to Royal Victoria in the Docklands but I have only visited that area of london 2 times before and both times was to view my apartment so i do not know the area at all really.

The surrounding area seems very nice but it seems very quiet and suburban.

Is their much to do in this area i.e. sports centres / clubs / bars / restaurants / shopping. My friend and I enjoy going out alot but everytime time we have previously stayed in london we have gone out in the west end etc which i realise is very far away and will be unaffordable for us in taxi fares. Also are there a good selection of shops in nearby places or is it a neccesity to travel into central london?
