Be Honest about Job Situation

I'm thinking of moving to London soon and I'm fully realistic about times being tough. I'm not one of those daydreamers that thinks as soon as I step off the plane everything will magically fall into place.

I'd like some honest opinions about the job situation right now in London. I'm a Graphic Designer but I'll admit I can use some brushing up on my skills. I've had jobs in Marketing, Design and Reception in the past but I'm not picky - shoot, I could stock groceries at the food store if I had to.

I've been job hunting from the safety of my home but would it be wise to just go for it even if I don't find something solid from home.

Thanks in advance.

Right then.

Firstly, well done on choosing to move to London, with a bit of planning you shouldn't regret it!

As for the jobs situation there is work but you need to be prepared to do something that probably isn't perfect for a while until you can find the right job. That doesn't mean you'll be cleaning toilets in pubs but it might mean taking on temp positions in companies doing admin work rather than the graphics/design work you want to do.

I'd recommend having a job lined up before getting here, unless you have a good wedge of savings that you're ok using up whilst you find a job. A good place to start would be with temping agencies who might be able to place you into companies with departments that might be of interest to you. It's surprising how many temporary jobs turn into full time positions if employers spot potential - it's win win for them, they pay nothing for the recruitment process and end up with high quality employees.

From your post it sounds like you've got a good attitude towards it, and that's vital if you're going to get anywhere in London.

Hope that's of some use, any more questions just post them.

Can you suggest any good temp agencies?

There are sooooo many it's enough to make my head spin! I'm coming from a country where you get work by having a connection in a company or you just open the newspaper and call. I know nothing about temp agencies and it's really overwhelming.

I'm completely prepared to do a temp job.

I have another question too: If I want to live in a flatshare do I need to have references or anything like that?

Thanks so much for the help! I'm feeling way more optimistic now!

(Are you guys hiring? :emb: )

The first temp agency name that aprings to mind is Reed, they seem pretty big.

The flatshare situation depends on the landlord regarding references. You might need to prove your income though - it's a catch 22 in a way.

shoot, my whole life seems like a catch 22. i'm finding it hard to line up work while i'm home but i don't want to leave it till i get there. i want to have employment lined up before i go so it would be easier to secure housing...oh lordy. part of me is wondering if this is worth it at all but i am trying to be optimistic
