Anyone doing anything for St Patrick's Day this week?

Nope because I'm not Irish. I get a bit irked by St Patrick's Day. Because someone's great gran was Irish, suddenly St Patrick's Day is a big thing that they must celebrate at all costs. And poor St George gets kicked aside and forgotten.

It's interesting how big St Patrick's Day is in England. I think everyone just gets caught up in the (stereo)typically Irish friendliness and enjoys a pint of Guinness.

I also kind of feel like a bit of a fraud celebrating the national day of another country but St Patrick's feels a bit different.

I think St George's day struggles a bit partly because of the racist undertones that now surround the use of the St George's cross flag (it's not something I'd wear comfortably) and partly because the English just aren't as fun-loving as the Irish (purely my opinion, I've met lots of Irish people and more English people and on-balance the Irish are jollier, not scientific, just opinion ;))

Racist undertones of St George's Cross? But it's our country's flag - we should be proud of it. Scottish and Welsh people don't use the Union jack, I don't get why it's so taboo to be able to say 'I'm proud to be English'. It's stupid parties like the BNP tainting things.

True, I think St Paddy's Day is an excuse for a pint, it's what the Irish'd do. Can't staaaaand Guinness myself.

I know it's crazy. I'm proud to be English but I'm not proud of a lot of English people.

I agree it's the hard-line nationalist parties who are tainting these things, but it's definately an issue.
