Hallo People,
starting from September 2006 I'll study in London. Last year I spent in Germany so I know that in every city you can live for half a price if you know 'how to' and 'where to'. Can you please, please, please tell me your tips and tricks for London?
thank you very much

Indeed in london you can live for less money if you want to, but you have to be careful not to fall into tourist traps. First of all I would say, try to avoid taking the public transport, but if you must, buy an oyster card asap. Unlimited travel per day for £4.40 by tube and £3.50 by train. Recently I have bought myself a bicycle, which I have bought for the same amount than a months travel ticket in zone 1-2. Cycle paths here in London are improving rapidly and it gets you wherever you are going faster than the tube, might want to check it out. If you want to do and see stuff. Well all the big museums have free admission. If you want to go to eat, a lot of nice restaurants offer great lunch deals (around £6.00 per person). I work in Covent Garden, around Neal street. Check that area out, it's amazing. Then musical and theatre stuff...Never go on a saturdayevening, prices tend to go up then (or maybe it is my imagination). I will always go during the week. Most people buy their tickets at Leicester square, but I have been doublecrossed once (by a legal agency not a tout) and now I prefer to buy my tickets at box offices all the time. Never pay more than £25.00. I went to Chicago for £17.50 for example. Excellent seating!
Then for the rest, keep checking for free stuff. Festivals, markets (like camden town market)...this site puts it all in perspective already, very handy. Lots of fun in your discovery!!

Thank you very much for your answer. Some really good pieces of advice :)
I was already thinking about buying used bike. Do you think it's better to do this in a shop or by ebay?
greetings
Maria

PS
In Germany you can buy cheap food in Aldi or Penny Markt. Are there any cheap shops like this in London?

You can try stocking up at cheap food stores, e.g. Lidl and Asda in Clapham, and also some of the markets will give you bargains food-wise. If you're on that side of London try North End Road Market, its cheap and the shops down the road are good value, you can probably buy almost everything you need on this road!

The other thing I found handy was supplementing my income by tutoring, if you come from Germany you could probably do German language lessons. I went with a company based at Imperial College, but there are loads of tutor companies around.

I've just finished doing my degree in London - it was difficult to budget but I had the time of my life! Part time work is a must, but also make sure you keep up to date with what is going on when. I found lots of free or very cheap things going on in London by checking here

Hope you find it useful!
