Motorbikes - A Cautionary Tale

Well I've been commuting to and from work on my trusty old motorbike for nearly 4 years. Yesterday, I was involved in my first accident. A car pulled across into me whilst I was overtaking, I ended up laying on the other side of the road (luckily, no oncoming traffic) with my bike crushing my leg.

My protective gear did their job - a closed front helmet saved my face from scraping across the floor, my elbow pads left me with my elbow skin in tact, and my boots suffered a ot of scraping and holes, which otherwise could have been in my leg.

I was stretchered to the hospital in an ambulance. A lot of friendly people looked after me while I laid face down on the floor for what felt like ages. When I was on te ambulance stretcher a little old lady who had been holding my hand kissed my forehead.

Luckily, I have no broken bones. But I do have a leg brace as I've cause a lot of damage there. Can't walk unaided, so am using crutches to shuffle about. Got bruises and aches all over and a mild concussion giving my head a spin. But I'm glad to be alive. Could so easily have not seen my birthday this friday or my wedding this summer. Eesh!

So the morals=

DRIVERS, mirror, signal, manouever and CHECK FOR MOTORBIKES. This lady should really have known I was behind her if she had been checking her mirrors along the road, and she should have indicated far, far sooner.

MOTORCYCLISTS, wear your protective gear. It saves lives and prevents permanent damage.

Bloody hell krunchie :speechless:

Glad you're ok. :)

This is a huge problem, especially in London as people are so stressed and in a rush to get somewhere. I also see a lot of bad riding from bikers (especially couriers). The two things combined lead to lots of accidents.

My uncle died 20 years ago when a car pulled out infront of him on his motorbike and my brother was knocked off his by a tourist in a hire car last year. It's such a risky mode of transport and the statistics make scary reading.

We're all pleased that you're ok.

Email us at contact @ ail and we'll pop something in the post to cheer you up a bit :)

That's not nice news bout your uncle. Unfortunately there's so much risk. Am lucky I didn't suffer the same fate. London is hard to drive a car in let alone a motorbike or bicycle. It's just the latter two are so much cheaper than public transport. My petrol for a week costs the same as a day travelcard.

My swellings and bruises are blossoming all over today. I now can't raise my left arm. Frustrating!!

I like presents! Thank you!! Expect an email from me :D
