London Statues - Horses with legs raised

There is a well known rumour regarding statues of figures on horses. Evidently if both of the front legs of the horse are raised then that person died in battle; if only one leg is raised then he died of wounds after the battle; and if no legs are raised then he emerged unscathed through battles. Can anyone substantiate this or know of its origins?
