Hello. A family member and I will be traveling to London in April. We are very excited about spending a week in the city, the only problem is, we really don't know how to take the tube. Embarassed I don't understand what "zones" mean, Confused or what they consist of, we're on a budget so would it be a smart idea to buy a traveler's card for the whole week, or buy a ticket each day?. I really need help it would be very appreciated! Thanks!! Cool Dude

Hi there,

Welcome to All In London.

Zones are basically used to work out pricing for tube journeys. Zone 1 is the heart of central London, Zone 2 is the next zone which is a little further out etc etc. The zones are all concentric circles(ish) on tube maps, to travel in 1 zone will cost less than to travel from one zone into another. Travelling across 3 zones is again more expensive.

I've made that sound far more complicated than it actually is, if you have a look at the transport for London website, tfl.gov.uk and have a look at the maps section you'll see the zones and it'll all become clear.

Our advice would be to buy a travel card if you intend to make a number of journeys on the underground, single tickets are now at a very high price and will cost you a fortune if you buy several a day.

7 Day Travel Card Prices

Zones 1 - 6 £43
Zones 1 - 4 £33.20
Zones 1 - 3 £27.40

I doubt you'll need to venture out to Zone 6, Zones 1 - 4, or 1 - 3 will probably be plenty and will be good value when you consider a single from zone 1 to zone 2 will cost £4!.

Hope that helps,
All In London

PS, you can buy your ticket in advance from our tickets section, just go to the tickets section and search for "underground tickets" and you'll be able to buy them from there.
