Heathrow layover question

Hi! This is my first post.

My husband and I are arriving at terminal 4, 11:25.

We leave from terminal 1, 18:35.

I'm not certain, but I am figuring that gives us about four and a half, maybe five hours if we want to leave the airport.

We may stay in the airport. Unfortunately, we don't have the right service for wireless for our laptop. And the broadband sounds expensive, 20 p a minute, I think I read. Otherwise, my husband could just trade stocks during that time. But we don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it.

So, to get out and get some fresh air in decent surroundings? Which town on the tube line would be best? I'm not keen on paying for a cab to Windsor, though that would be nice.

So where is a place we could just knock around a bit, have lunch, tea, visit a pub, perhaps?

Or, alternatively, what would you do with that six hour layover, knowing it is shortened by changing terminals, needing to be at the gate two hours early, security lines?

Thanks for any help.

Is Richmond too far? Is that a good choice? Or Kew?

Thanks for any help at all or whatever you wish to say.

Hi Vesta,

Welcome to our forums

With security being so tight at London's airports these days I'd leave as much time as you can for checking-in/security checks, I think around 2 hours before departure is about right for Heathrow.

So you'd probably get around 4 hours to spend. If you wanted to go to Richmond/Kew it would probably take around 45 - 60 minutes from Heathrow so wouldn't leave you much time there.

I'd recommend jumping on the tube and getting off a Chiswick Park if you're just after a pub lunch and a stroll around. There are plenty of restaurants/pubs and shops and if it's a nice day you can sit on the green.

Failing that Heathrow does have a lot of shops and facilities and 4 hours would go by quite quickly.

Hope that's of some use.
