What is wrong with these people?

Why is it that they think they are acting on behalf of the entire country by making this protest? I actually think the extra Terminal will be great for London.

If these people just got themselves jobs and hobbies they'd soon forget all this nonsense.

Do us all a favour and give it a rest.

Of course, its ok for them to travel down in gas guzzling old bangers. One of the protestors admitted he flew on holiday once a year.

Controversial stuff guys - going to "Hot Topic" this thread to see if we can get any more views. We couldn't possibly comment as we are, as ever, impartial ;)

How diplomatic AIL ;)

im one of those sitting on the fence people. really not sure what my view is on the subject.

on the one hand, having a new terminal would be very good in the long run to cut down some of the madness you find in busy London airports over the past few years.

but on the other i do think that global warming is getting so noticeable now, you just need to look out of your window to see it. and i fully support people wanting to help stop this. we have to protect the future planet as best we can and if these people want to give their time to do it then fair play.

oh and i live fairly close to the heathrow flight path!!!

Interesting topic though, i'll be interested to read on...

My thread's gone hot, that's awesome :)

Thanks for replying.

I agree that our current weather systems are looking a little strange and off the norm of the past few years. However, I don't believe this is a global warming issue - it's quite simply the weather, it does change and always will. There have been summers like this in the past and will be more in the future. There have always been Tsunamis, hurricanes and other natural events, I'm really surprised that they haven't blamed earthquakes on climate change as well as I'm sure there are 10,000 environment scientists out there who will provide a graph with evidence of this if their next 3 years funding is dependent on it.

I don't dispute that C02 from human activity will have an impact on the climate in some way, but I can't get onboard the "the earth is falling apart" bandwagon just yet, there just isn't enough evidence. Yes Polar bears are dying, but it's not because half of Wigan migrates to Benidorm every summer with RyanAir, it's because of natural climate shifts.

What I hate about this issue is the blanket targeting of certain industries and people in society. Labelling people with 4x4s and those who fly environmental pigs is just plain bullying and the same level of intolerance wouldn't be acceptable in many other situations. I've heard countless stories of people's cars being stickered or scratched or worse by these activists and it makes my blood boil just thinking about it.

Yep, just because they trundle around in a 1970s VW van they think it's environmetally friendly, even though the engine is kicking out the same polution as 4 modern cars put together. I won't get started on the eco cars debate it's something I've spent a long time looking at as a consumer and the level of ignorance about it from these types makes me very sad.

This doesn't surprise me at all.

Just open your eyes man, can't you see we're in the middle of a global warming heatwave? :smug:

The great irony of course is that the people best equipped to cope with this extreme weather are those who inadvertently have caused the end of world by purchasing 4x4s.

This is what most people are saying now. Whilst I can understand where it comes from I just don't get it. Surely if what we're seeing now is the effect of climate change then making plans for cutting emissions by 2020 is utterly futile?

The current weather in the UK is not unheard of, yes it's bad but where did the phrase "The British Summer" come from?

In my view, none of the severe weather we have experienced is proof of 'climate change.' It is just a poor summer - nothing more, nothing less - something that was the norm throughout most of the Sixties and has been repeated on several occasions more recently.

Going further back, history also shows that 1912 was an atrocious summer. It was so bad, in fact, that we are still some way short of the torrential downpours that happened that year. It seemed particularly bad at the time because 1911 had been such an exceptionally good summer.

Not my words, that's taken from an article by John Kettley written in July for the Mail.

It's just all too easy to blame everything on climate change and global warming and in turn the companies and individuals who are seen as responsible for it.

PS, potclover, I'm not having a go at you by quoting you, it's just your comment is what I hear from most people when talking about this summer. :)
