How much of my salary should go on rent?

Hi everyone,

I'll be moving to London in September and was wondering if anyone could give me advice about rental costs and how much I should be aiming to pay.

I've always wanted to live in London and I'm definitely willing to pay a premium to live in a nice area like Notting Hill or Camden, but can anyone tell me how much I would pay for a room (either double or single) in an area like this? I'm a graduate and will be making about £1500 a month/£375 a week after tax - what proportion of my salary should be spent on rent? I was thinking somewhere around 1/3 - £130 per week, but not sure if this would be enough for what I'm looking for, so if anyone can give me any advice I'd be really grateful!

Cheers. Happy

Hi there

The deciding factor is probably if you're planning on living alone/with one other person or if you'll live in a larger group. If you're with 3+ then I'd think £130 pw would be plenty to get you a decent place even in those areas you mention (although possibly not in a top-notch place say right near the tube), but obviously in smaller numbers the price per person goes up quite considerably.

Cheers Sooz that's great to know, I'll definitely be looking for a flatshare so that's well within my budget. Thanks a lot! :D
