Hello everyone,

I am going to be moving to london for a new job and was curious what is more efficient. Is it more practical to do the pay as you go Oyster Card deal or get a monthly ticket between zones.

Kind regards,

Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Glad you'll be heading to London - it's a great city, we're sure you'll love it!

To answer your question, an Oyster card is definitely the best way to pay for transport in London. It's designed to be the cheapest way to travel.

You can buy a card, which is just £3 and then top up your card using the machines whenever the credits on it run low.

It's an easy system and will save you ££££££££s!

Find more info here: www.tfl.gov.uk/oyster

Hope this helps and have a great move to London!

All the best,

To clarify, a travelcard these days is also put on your Oystercard, so you'd get an Oystercard irrespective if you used it to do pay as you go or for a travelcard.

Whether you should use it for a travelcard depends how often you travel. If you are doing a return journey on the tube for at least 5 days a week, then it is more cost-effective to buy a travelcard. The benefit of having this on Oyster is that if you go outside your travelcard zone or if you happen to forget to renew, it's less of a hassel as you can just use credit you've put on your card.

If you are doing some trips on the bus or don't travel every day then it may well be cheaper to do pay as you go.

Enjoy London!
