I'm moving to London in September, but I'll be going to Liverpool regularly on the weekends. I know I can take the Megabus for around eleven quid, but I was hoping to spend two and a half hours on the train rather than five hours on a coach. All the train websites have come up with around 40 quid for a return ticket with my railcard, does anyone know if I could get there cheaper?

£40 sounds pretty cheap for the train. Have you had a look at the prices for advanced train bookings? Might get it for a bit less.
Not sure you'll be able to beat the Megabus price, unless you hitchhike.

I agree - hitch hiking is pretty painless
