Proud to be British?

Reading the "Euro or not" thread has prompted me to start thinking about a few things, in order, they were European travel, European food, the poor acting on Eldorado and finally where we Brits stand in Europe.

Not sure about everyone else but I'm almost embarassed to be British in some countries. When you hear the genuine impressions that people in some countries have about us it makes you cringe.

According to most of Europe Brits are a race of overweight ignorant alcoholics who eat poor food and are raising a generation of apathetic state-dependent morons.

Are they wrong is my question to you.

Hi Mogwai...Just read your post re 'If you were King/Queen' for the day...

I'd probably invade France, then remove all speed cameras.
..

isn't it that kind of unprovoked, negative feeling towards Europeans which also goes some way to explaining their view of us?? :-?

No no, that was what's known in the trade as a "joke". Of course I wouldn't actually invade France, I'd invade Belgium first.

This is true but every country has their fair share.

You should be proud to be wherever you are from.

I live in a town that was voted the worst town in England but I love living here and I'm proud to say I'm from here.

I find it annoying that just because I'm young and from the town I live in people seem to think that I have an attitude, I'm not smart, do nothing in life apart from hang around on streets and I'm a $L@G!

When I go to some places and people ask me where I'm from they just look down at me and either stop talking to me or say they feel sorry for me!

I judge people buy who they are not how they look or where they are from.

But to answer the question I'm proud of being British! I love England and hopefully I'll live here all my life.

Sorry to ramble on a bit!

i'm actually proud to be british, i think you should be proud of where you come from anywehre but when i think of the history of britain i am proud to say i am however i am not proud of the way the country is going, people have changed and thats probably why everyone thinks that of us, i think most of us are 'normal' (sorry for the word normal didnt know what else to say) and then there's another type of brit who just embarrass the rest of us. It's like on the news the other day they showed you footage of drunk brits on holiday in malia, now that was embarrassing on us, i know people go to spain to get drunk and have a good time and thats fine but i think they are taking it too far.

Also i think with the government we have at the moment people are bound to say something to us, i think if we have someone whos half decent running the country we might not have such a bad image.

I'm proud to be British as I'm proud to be all the things that I am.

Wish I was better on the guitar though...

Is embarrassing when you get things happen like drunken hooliganism happening, but still, it's not me. We are still a country with a colourful history and culture. Though I don't doubt we are getting a few problems with the nanny state thing...

There's negative stereotypes about lots, if not all countries, which I'm sure they don't like. Like when Americans are perceived as overweight, ignorant, god-fearing, television-worshipping idiots by some. Things like Jerry Springer never helped that image!! Umm.. Germans having no sense of humour, Koreans all eat dogs and cats... etc etc. Whereas if you were to go to these places, I'm sure you'd enjoy the good things they have to offer, and realise that these misconceptions are exactly that.

I'm proud to be English

I don't think of myself as british :confused2:

I think that there is good & bad in every country.
You'll always get some people who lower the tone so to speak but it doesn't mean we're all binge drinkers or footie hooligans.
