Don't know about you, but I'm not sure it is POSSIBLE to buy a house for under £175,000 in London, so the chancellor's generous concession on stamp duty is about as useful as a chocolate teapot to Londoners.

Agreed.

Also this is just plugging another hole in the ailing economy... all these little alterations and concessions serve to do is simply draw the period of the downturn out longer than necessary.

Unfortunately the country will have to go through a period of tightening their belts - there's no way to side-step the suffering I'm afraid. I heard an advert on the radio the other day from a new car dealership telling listeners to take advantage of their "Recession-busting finance".
No... recession-causing finance.

I think it's going to take a couple of years to get through this and we're all going to have to dig deep. Altering the level at which we pay stamp duty (and it's only delaying paying, you'll still have to stump up for it eventually) isn't going to dig anyone out of any holes.

But, what do I know? :-?
