Lol I'm in my twenties and get asked for I.D. Doesn't matter if you look older, bouncers have seen it all before, they will know an estimate age and just to be sure they will most likely ask for I.D. You can try the passport in the hotel thing, but just don't be disappointed if it doesn't work!!
As a back up you could go somewhere like TGI where it's part restaurant, then your mates can get the drinks from the bar. Though is pricey. however I guess any alcohol in Covent Garden will be pricey!!
The best you can do is just keep trying one club/pub/bar after another until you succeed. Roadhouse might be worth trying if workmates are anything to go by, but don't know about how tight on ID they are. Maybe if you don't medd about in the queue, i.e. act how you reckon a 'mature' 40 year old would act and maybe with your looks, it couldn't hurt (not suggesting you'll be playfighting or something, but body language can go a long way!).
Good luck!!
