is this doable? i have never commuted in my life (other than on my bike...). my partner's got a new job now (for the next 7 months) in chichester and due to the nature of her work she needs to be based around there. i could commute on the other hand. but then i am not sure if 1.5hr train ride to london is doable at all?
does anyone have daily long-distance commuting experience in this country?

thanks,
oz

I don't have direct experience of commuting, but an old colleague used to to 2 hours each way (I think it was Ipswich - London, but could be mistaken). He was OK with it, and had been doing it for years. Once you're on the train you've got a decent period of time where you can do some reading, get on with some work or have a snooze. Don't forger, depending on your journey it could take an hour or more just to get across London on the tube.

I would check the service on your route to/from work - what are the chances of getting a seat, how reliable is the service. Also, ask at work if you can come in and leave a little later and that way you might be able to avoid the overcrowded trains. It might even be a chance for you to work from home a day or two a week.

many thanks for the reply & info, adam! i work in clapham and could get off at clapham junction - i.e. no tube. i think i should do couple of test trips to see how it goes. i am having a bit of mental barrier with commuting so good to hear of your mate who used to do it. that's encouraging at least. my work's quite flexible in terms of hours so i guess i could avoid the rush hours etc. and might even start working fr home a day or two as you say. in general - can i trust the info i'd get from trainstations re reliability of the service etc?
thanks man.

No problem, happy to be helpful.

As for reliability stats, I don't know how accurate they are BUT there are quite a few rail passenger groups out there who give the rail companies a good bashing at every opportunity. If they tried to fiddle their stats I reckon they'd get a real kicking.
