I´m considering moving to London from Sheffield to study at Goldsmiths University in New Cross, i was looking for a bit of advice as my financial situation is not great and its putting me off making the move thinking i might not be able to afford the cost of living in London. What would be a realistic mouthly amount that i would need to live there? I will more than likely be getting a student grant to pay for my accommodation, so i will have to work to pay for everything else. How easy is it to get a job in this area? I´ve got lots of Bar work, Customer service and Administration experience so i will be looking for any job within these areas.
Any opinions on Goldsmiths University, the area or the best areas to live that are near the university?
I would love to be able to move to London so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
Sorry for the delayed reply to your message... I'm afraid I'm no expert on any of that, but I do know that New Cross doesn't exactly have a great reputation for being a nice/safe place. I guess there are particular enclaves there though that students live and feel safe in - do some careful research before taking anything though and DEFINITELY don't take acommodation without having seen it first!

I think Goldsmith's is ok as a Uni though - a girl I know (who was very clever and really nice) recently got a lecturing job there, so judging by her I reckon it must be a decent place.

Re costs, aside from rent (for which you would have to budget absolute minimum £100 per week), another major cost is council tax (although students are exempt so that wouldn't affect you immediately) and bills. But generally you are in control of other costs. Obviously you choose how often to go out, where to go and where to shop. If you want to have a great social life going to the best places, it will cost a fortune, but if you can get into the budget, student lifestyle your day-to-day living can be kept to sensible levels I reckon.

Good luck anyway - hope you get to where you want to be

New Cross is fine, loads of students there, lots of bars and the like to entertain you.

Living costs, well depends on what sort of digs you will be staying in. It seems you will be forking out a good £360+ per month just for rent.

There is a big Sainsburys just down the road so cheap food should not be a problem.

So really its down to what you want to do and pay for! Nights out in the SU will be cheap, nights out nearby a little more so, and of course even more for in the West End. Expect to pay up to £5 entry for clubs, and £2-4 for drinks depending on what and where.

It will be hard for sure, rent will eat up most of your money, but you can make it work and enjoy it!

New Cross is alright, it has some areas/estates you want to avoid but so does everywhere. Lewisham nearby is not so bad now, and has a little shopping centre. You also have Deptford which was run down but is quickly becoming a 'buzz' place to get into before prices rise. Peckham is a bit less desirable though.
