How to choose the right hospital?

I've had my first and didn't really choose the hospital at which she would be born. I just went with the default option for where I lived (St Peters in Chertsey). In hindsight, although I was happy overall with the service we received, I think I may have opted for somewhere else if I'd have bothered to look into it a bit more than I did.

I've heard that the other hospital nearby (Royal Surrey) although smaller and not as well-rated on the official stats version, is actually much more homely and has less of a mass-market feel about it. Overall I did feel I was one on a conveyor belt at St Peter's and never really felt like I was an individual that they were giving individual treatment to. I know this isn't really their fault as they have so many patients that it's impossible to deal with each person as they individually would like.

I wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences? Does anyone have any specific recommendations of hospitals in and around London? Would anyone have chosen differently in hindsight?
