Moving to London in July

Hi there - I've been living abroad for 12 years but will be moving back to the UK in the summer. I'm originally from Devon and although visited London over the years, I've never really lived there for any length of time so at the moment I'm trying to figure out the best location to live. I will be working near Blackfriars. I'm single and so really wanting somewhere safe; in a neighborhood near to shops and some good bars; plus near to transport links so I won't have a horrible commute into work. One train or one bus is my limit! I currently live in the US and the area I live in is a good one - quite wealthy - but like London you walk 4 blocks West and it becomes pretty dodgy. I've lived in the city for the past 7 years and so could do with a nice town or small community vibe too. Any advice?
