What area to live in? How far/how long/ how expensive to commute to Clerkenwell?

Hello all, wondered if you could help me. I have recently been offered a new job in London. It is in Clerkenwell. I am looking spend approx £500 all inclusive per month and know that it will have to be a house share. I was wondering; where can i live which is within easy commuting distance and is going to get me the most bang for my buck? (Area names much appreciated). People say 'south of the river' but this seems like miles away!

I am just wondering whether any saving i make on renting away from Clerkenwell, is going to be gobbled up by the commute?
