Nice areas to live in the west...?

Me and my boyfriend are moving to London for uni, and need to live somewhere inbetween both of them. I've looked at the train maps and know the possibilities, but I wondered whether anyone had any insights into what these places are like? We're on a budget and would like somewhere with easy access to the tube/station, some shops, and pleasant, not slummy?
