All In London Review
Clapham Tandoori goes beyond typical tikkas and masalas
In 1999, this restaurant and takeaway opposite Clapham Common tube station won the award for Best Lamb Curry, for a dish called raan mussallam. It’s still on the menu today, and happily, it’s deserving of reward – an exceedingly tender leg of lamb, marinated in spices and sitting in a rich, flavoursome sauce, it’s supremely satisfying on a cold winter’s night. Sadly they don’t wish to reveal the secret to getting the meat so soft it’s a struggle to pick it up with a fork, but anyhoo, this isn’t the only award Clapham Tandoori has won. Their chicken hariali was the Best Chicken Curry of 2000, and this year the restaurant was crowned Healthy Curry Provider of the year at the English Curry awards, which insiders describe as the Oscars of the curry world.
The hara mirch tilapia is another good dish where fish is marinated in yoghurt and spices like ginger, garlic, chillies and mustard seeds. What arrives is a sea of dark green sauce drowning the fish, however beneath the mulch the tilapia is flaky and firm, with a mildly tangy curry.
A starter of chicken momo is minced chicken with coriander stuffed inside doughy, samosa-shaped parcels. It’s nice but a very large portion, particularly when compared to the golda chingri special, labelled as “prawns cooked in CT’s own special sauce.” This turns out to be very similar to a prawn cocktail, although top marks are due for presentation, as a pretty flower has been painted onto the plate with various dressings. Spinach kofta is another interesting dish: large balls of spinach are filled with a rich cashew nut cream, although the advertised melon sauce is not discernible.
Political endorsements aside, Clapham Tandoori goes beyond typical tikkas and masalas.

The Clapham Tandoori has been our favourite Indian restaurant for many years with delicious food, generous portions and good vegetarian options. Would certainly recommend it!
