This pub was built in 1869 and is named after the Holborn Viaduct. Its appearance is deceptive because although it has quite a large curved frontage, it is actually fairly small inside. Most of its original decoration has survived, from the mirrors and decorated glass to the three paintings of wistful maidens. It is built on the site of Newgate Prison and its cellars are the former cells. It serves bar food between midday and 8pm.

Best For
London's best gin bars
The naughty juniper beguiles us so.
The Viaduct Tavern used to have much more to do with gin than it presently does, in fact, its whole look was derived from the flash facades of the 18th century gin palaces. However, it does claim to serve a truly great gin & tonic from its range of fifteen gins. It once contained gin vaults below the pub, where bottles were stored in a converted Victorian jail. This is the historical option.

Fantastic place...oozing character. Good but not excellent food and very friendly bar staff. A credit to the boss.
Despite what you say it was not built on the site of Newgate Prison and the cellar is NOT former cells.Very obliging staff will give a free tour of the rooms below. What they say are former cells are storage racks for barrels and the hole in the roof, purported to be for prisoners food is in fact for the hoses connecting the barrels to the bar. Nice story though.Loved the friendliness, the character and ambience of the place. Would return anytime.
