As the oldest residential building in Hackney, Sutton House offers a glimpse into how the Tudors lived. Aristocratic Tudors that is, as it was built for Henry VIII by Sir Ralph Sadleir, then the Secretary of State. Nestled amid post-war council homes, the National Trust have carefully restored the building back to its original 16th century glory, and among its many period features are sumptuous rooms with fireplaces and oak panelling. In fact the building is so richly decorated that it makes frequent appearances on TV shows when it’s not open to the public. Other attractions include a café and a second hand bookshop which also sells a fine range of vintage teapots.
