This small green space in Camden has a colourful history. In the early 1800s it was used as a burial ground with hundreds of graves, however later in the century it was bought for the purpose of building almshouses over it. The dead were exhumed to much uproar, to the point where those doing the digging were pelted with stones by members of the public. The horrific smell from the bodies caused an intervention from the council who put a stop to it, hence the current park surrounded by the former almshouses. Old tombstones remain, but it’s becomea popular lunchtime spot for locals complete with a child’s play area, and portable barbecues are allowed on the site.
