All In London Review

Your local chippy with some contemporary additions.

Review Image
What would a village be with out its chip shop? Every town, big or small relies on battered fish and chips to ease them into the weekend. Being not dissimilar to a small town of its own, Victoria Park has its own chippy, which just so happens to be one of the best around.

Look up and down Lauriston Road and you’ll see a deceptively diverse range of eateries (and, er, drinkeries) on either side. There are artisanal delis, wine shops, fine butchers and who knows how many bars. But there is also the Fish House. Doubling up as a takeaway and restaurant, this fish and chip shop is worth travelling to. Some might believe that the fish and chip shop is all about the takeaway and while that view has its merits; those who eat in at The Fish House are rewarded with a menu that casts its net further adrift than the common haddock and cod. Sit in the clean, minimal restaurant and you can pick from the likes of moules mariniere, scallop, mussel and kings prawn risotto and salmon and haddock fish cakes with poached egg. Pop in during the day and you can treat yourself to kippers with poached eggs on toast – a classic east end snack with a touch of contemporary Hackney thrown in for good measure.

The takeaway menu features cod, haddock, rock, plaice and skate. We sample the haddock, which is delicious. Crispy batter - that’s easy on the grease – gives way to steaming, pillowy white meat. The chips are equally good. Misshapen, crispy and fluffy in the middle, they’re the real deal. Speaking of the real deal, naturally you can find curry sauce, pickled eggs, mushy peas and gherkins on the extras list.

Since the quality of Faulkners on Kingsland Road took a nosedive the Fish House must be one of East London’s best fish and chip shops. Don’t be surprised to see queues, especially on weekends.

If you're on a diet then hit the back button

There is a whole lot more to this Victoria Park restaurant than battered fish and chips. However, this is all about the deep-fried so whatever the quality of their mussels and crab we mustn’t get distracted. Portions are large, eco approved produce always hits the plates and a great atmosphere matches some of the best fish and chips in Hackney.

Eyes bigger than your belly? We'll see...

Nothing beats battered fish and a heap of chips when you’re famished, and when you’re really ravenous the portions at Fish House can’t be beaten.
