Private Area

Trattoria da Luigi is a traditional Sardinian restaurant located on the busy, cosmopolitan Stoke Newington Church Street. A seriously cute dining room with pillar-box red frontage, rustic brick walls, Victorian fireplaces and eclectic furnishings and art greets the hungry as they arrive and settle in at the Trattoria, a warm and cosy spot where one feels immediately at home with the help of the smiling staff. While the décor and service are utterly unique in the area, it’s Trattoria da Luigi’s food that really sets it apart from other restaurants, the menu featuring the less often experienced cuisine of Sardinia rather than the expected Italian usuals. Chef Roberto Tonzanu was born and brought up in the north of the island, coming to London to work with celebrity chef Gennaro Contaldo before gaining further experience with the Rossopomodoro group then opening this, his very own restaurant. Roberto’s wealth of experience and passion for Sardinian foods sings through on his menu of distinct flavours, fabulous produce and colourful presentation, only improved by the Sardinian themed wine list that accompanies it.

The best restaurant in London. Absolutley amazing food, very friendly and lovely staff, great decoration and a fantastic atmosphere. Great for either couples, familes, friends. Suitable for all occasions! Really recommend you eat here."

I visited on a Saturday night recently. The food was lovely and I can see that ordinarily this would be an excellent friendly little restaurant. But be warned! They seem to have started holding club nights in the adjacent room – accessed through the restaurant itself. Our meal was eaten to the accompaniment of next-door’s booming bass soundtrack, while queues of lairy kids streamed in and out, spilling their cans of Red Stripe around our table. The restaurant toilet, by 10.30pm, was as bad as you normally see in a club at 2am – I didn’t dare venture beyond the door without my wellies. Bizarrely the staff didn’t seem to fully acknowledge that this whole 'club/restaurant' scenario was unusual, and not really what you're after when you sit down for a meal and bottle wine in a little Italian restaurant... We got a free Limoncello. It’s a shame, but I can’t recommend it.

since this little paradise has opened I've been at least 10 times and always they made me feel like at home...in Sardinia! the atmosphere is very warm and the food (that is the main thing!) is always fresh and delicious: I have tried so many different dishes...from pizza to pasta, from fish and seafood to meat that you can't find easily in most of the restaurants in town like the sukling pig or venison...or rabbit!!! but they have also a generous selection of dishes for vegetarians....what else can I say.....I love this place, very good balance between quality of food and cost of dishes...I definitely will go again....and again...and again!!!

Trattoria Da Luigi just gets better and better - benissimo! The warm friendly staff make one feel one's going home to a family celebration in one's own honour, the remarkably high quality of the food continues to astonish at its inventiveness, execution, and presentation. An evening simply slips by in joy and delight! Don't neglect the specials board, my partner loved his venison ragout filled ravioli and my giant prawns in bread crumbs with gorgonzola and balsamic sauce were sublime, but even the simple salads are prepared and presented with an unexpected depth of care and attention.

All I can say is thank you again Stella and the rest of the team - we will be back and I urge everyone else to go to!

encore grazie mille.

My partner & I delighted in a more than marvellous meal with the cheerful staff (Stella is indeed a star) yesterday. Fabulous welcome, caring staff, lovely seating position (I felt like royalty) and the food - sublime!! So glad we both chose seafood packed fregola sarda (the specials are the things to keep an eye on) - magnificent. The melanzane parmigiana is the best I've ever eaten, and as it's one of my favourite dishes I've eaten it all over London and in Olbia, Sardinia too.
A glass of cannonau and delicious food with wonderful company - what can be better - the best restaurant in London - thank you so much to all involved, love Catherine

Staff are friendly, they really try their best in front of the embarrassment of serving such food: we were served seafood starters - mussels and baby squid - and we can say with no uncertainty that they last were swimming in the sea was longer than a year ago. As for the main course, the seabass was very dry, sad and tasteless; the artichoke, calamari and bottarga linguine didn't have a hint of bottarga and the artichokes tasted rancid.
We were served a decent complimentary limoncello, though ...
It's a real pity because the overall atmosphere and the premises are really nice.
Have your say
