All In London Review

Whether mod, rocker or raver; everyone mixes at the World's End

Urban legend has it that the World’s End is the biggest pub in Europe and since I’ve always believed – and taken some warped London pride - in that claim to fame there is no way I’m going to fact check it and risk making myself cry. So, there you have it. The World’s End, biggest pub in Europe (wink-wink).

Whether or not this Camden meeting point is really the biggest is a mute point. It’s pretty big and that’s all that matters. Anybody who has come through Camden to any one of the venues dotted around it will surely have rolled the dice and taken their chances at The World’s End in their time. The labyrinthine corridors inside lead to lounges, nooks, crannies, cubbyholes, and probably even crawl spaces. You can get lost but that’s half the fun. This is history right here. The World’s End has been a landmark pub for as long as anyone on earth can remember. It is a place that knows no judgment. Mod or rocker, we’re all friends here. The World’s End is a leveler.

Multiple bars serve a healthy balance between regular lagers and cider with unnecessary ice and though it may not amount to the most appealing meal you’ll ever eat, it does serve food. The toasted tuna mayo sandwich with chips is a revelation and there are similar choices that you can find displayed behind the sickly glow of a lonely food hatch. Okay, so you don’t really want to eat here, just stick to the red beer before heading down to the Underworld – the club – below. The Underworld is a rock/metal club by nature, which explains the propensity toward Pantera t-shirts among The World’s End ‘metalati’ – yes, I just crossed metal with glitterati.

In many ways The World’s End is representative of a small town pub, a small town pub that grew so freakishly big that it had to be moved to Camden. It attracts all sorts of people, plays loud music, wouldn’t know a queue at the bar if it saw one (which it never would) and has some of the finest fruit machines around. And don’t forget, it’s the biggest pub in Europe!

In our continued search to bring you the best bits of London we've cranked the dial up to 11.

It may not have secret doorways, snappy cocktail lists or Venezuelan streetfood to make you go wow but it is among the biggest pubs in Europe. Size matters and in a pub where getting lost is a mere formality you just have to applaud the drinking space on offer at Camden pub The World’s End.
