All In London Review

Catch the weather on a good day and it's a great place for a bright brunch...

Review Image
Painted with all the right pastel tones, filled with the kind of furniture whose price you might balk at in a local secondhand shop and with delicate design touches in all the right places The Market Café is surely in it for the long haul.

Located at the foot of hip Broadway Market in East London, this relatively young restaurant/diner/café/bar is a breath of fresh air to the street. It was about time someone brought eggs Benedict to a stretch of road that already boasted more laptop wielding, almond croissant eating wanderers than you’d find in any university. Demand was there and then supply arrived to make its acquaintance.

Catch the café on a good weather day and the sun streams in through the large windows and bathes the place in natural light. If you curse London and its drab image then the Market Café is a place to which you can come and take it all back. Staff verge on the American Apparel side and service is sweet. Teething problems were sorted quickly in its first year on the block.

Dinner at the Market Café means fresh pasta, fish of the day and a classic dose of modern gastro pizzazz. Lamb shank Milanese, bone marrow and gremolata and the bavette steak, béarnaise and chips are both well priced and as tasty as they sound. But, we prefer the light dishes. Not because the main meals are less than great but because the homemade pasta with meat sauce was really great.

The aforementioned Eggs Benedict appears on the brunch menu where it is accompanied by a good-looking spinach, caramelized red onion and goats cheese frittata, Eggs Royale with salmon and a premium take on the great British fry up.

The tight little package is wrapped up with a drinks list that becomes the bow on top. Short cocktails or ‘Hackney Cups’ as they’re known in these parts - or at least in the Market Café - include Negronis, Gimlets and gin and cucumber, while draught beer comes courtesy of the Camden Town brewery.

A restaurant that offers a meal for two and a drink each for less than £40.00 on this Hackney street is a restaurant worth visiting. We’d travel to it, especially if the sun happened to be shining.
