All In London Review

Inexpensive and satisfying Pan-Asian dishes

Review Image
Bintang is instantly likeable. Laid out over two floors, it’s small but buzzy, as most of the tables are occupied, and some of the diners appear to be regulars. The lighting has been turned down low, and there is little in the way of décor save for a few bold prints on the walls.

The menu has dishes from different Asian cuisines, like pad Thai, Malaysian beef rendang and Japanese katsu curry. Salt and pepper squid is crispy and flavoursome, with a thick, sweet tamarind sauce. Summer rolls, a Vietnamese snack, are served cold, made from rice paper and filled with crunchy beansprouts, carrots and lettuce.

A whole seabass has been fried till crispy on the outside while the flesh is nice and flaky. A lemongrass and tamarind sauce gives it a good citrusy aroma. Beef bulgogi is a strong-flavoured dish from Korea, with strips of rib eye marinated and griddled, although here the marinade is a very western sweet and smoky BBQ sauce, which is the only slight disappointment.

Desserts are highly indulgent, particularly the homemade Oreo ice cream with waffles, drizzled in chocolate sauce, it’s as saccharine as it sounds. The matcha crème brûlée has a more balanced blend of green tea and sweet custard.

With main courses starting from £8, Bintang’s dishes are both satisfying and inexpensive, (plus it’s BYOB, which helps to keep costs down). It’s little wonder they’ve been going for a quarter of a century.

Still great food but save a quid or two on the bar bill

This Pan-Asian restaurant on Camden Road serves quality, tasty dishes at affordable prices, and is small and quirky enough for a date. It's unlicensed, so take your own booze or pop into the off licence next door.

Great eats, on the cheap...

Budget restaurants often compromise on atmosphere, but that’s not the case at this romantic little eatery with exposed brick walls and dim lighting. Also unusually for a Pan-Asian restaurant, their menu includes Filipino dishes like empanadas and lumpia spring rolls alongside Korean beef bulgogi, Malay nasi goreng (fried rice with ground peanuts) and Japanese katsu curry.

Big meal + jumping up and down = fun times!

There’s plenty to like about Bintang: the romantic, hushed lighting, the BYOB policy, and of course the fantastic food which spans Vietnamese, Chinese,Malaysian,Korean and Thai cuisines. There’s ramen, nasi goreng, beef bulgogi and whole seabass cooked in lemongrass and tamarind sauce,to name a few dishes.
