Simply Thai opened in 1998 in a “small café” in Hampton Wick, Middlesex, then relocated to the outskirts of Teddington, Middlesex in November 2004. At the new premises, Simply Thai was designed with a trendy, modern minimalist concept with an atmosphere of style, comfort and intimacy

Patria Weerapan, the founder, has devoted her passion of cooking at the resturant since its opening. Her style of cooking offers a captivating contrast of classic and contemporay, skilfuling balancing key flavours that are the heart of her cooking, and intriguing blend of old and new.

An intense devotion to her cooking enhancing the dining experience from start to finish. Beginning with her sumptuous soup, pungent spicy salad, tensely aromatic rich creamy curry and crunchy vegetables ending, with her haunting coconut crème brulee. The discerning dinner perceives the passion, love, heart and soul Patria infuses into her cooking.

All In London Review

I simply can’t imagine what Mr Ramsay was thinking when he endorsed the place.

It was my friend’s birthday and I had promised her that I would take her out to dinner somewhere nice locally as a celebration. I gave her some ideas of where we might go but she told me that she really wanted to try this restaurant as it had been highly recommended by Gordon Ramsay. Fair enough.

So we drove to Teddington and managed to find a parking space on a nearby road. I have to say that I wasn’t inspired by the exterior décor but when we entered my heart sank. It was dark and plain and looked like something that had been forgotten since the 1970s. Workmanlike would be too generous. Plain tables and chairs - and a bit battered. Mud coloured curtains and indescribable dark plant prints on the walls. It really was quite depressing.

We were welcomed and shown to a table for four people near the window covered front curtains. They asked us when our two companions would be joining us. My friend explained that the booking was for two people. So they moved us to another table. It wasn’t exactly busy either – at 8pm on a Friday? We were also so cold that we had our coats over our shoulders. And every time someone entered, the door was left open and the temperature plummeted further. The people at the next table had to keep getting up to close it.

The menu looked decidedly amateurish. But we made our choices and hoped for the best whilst sipping a glass of house white wine (£4.50). The service was slow. The only good thing I can say about my friend’s chicken soup (£6.50) was that there was plenty of it. It was bland. My dim sum (£6.75) was passable.

The main courses were pretty awful. The red snapper (£13.95) was coated with a treacle like sauce and was so tough it was difficult to chew – horribly overcooked. The prawns with chillies (£9.95) were probably the highlight of the meal – and they weren’t that great. The chicken Pad Thai (£8.95) was amongst the poorest I have even eaten. The total cost was £67.76 which I thought was way too much for the rather poor food, miserable environment and slow service. And they don’t take American Express.

Looking around us, the other diners seemed to be happy enough – it appeared to be a casual pop-in place. The beef salad being eaten at the next table looked good. Maybe we had been unlucky in our food choices? Or maybe we caught them on a bad Friday night?

I don’t like to write negative reviews – but there are at least five other Thai restaurants nearby that produce much better food in a much nicer environment and at a better price. I’ve been to Thailand so it’s not even as if the food was more authentic than what our Western palates prefer. I simply can’t imagine what Mr Ramsay was thinking when he endorsed the place.
