All In London Review
D&D’s first hotel is home to Michelin-starred Angler, but its eponymous restaurant is also worthy of attention
It’s a typical City restaurant in many respects: there’s dim lighting, pseudo-masculine furnishings, pop art on the walls and prices slightly to the right of the mid-priced bracket.
We start with velvety scallops with smoky ham, crispy chicken skin and creamed sliced leeks, a winning combination; similar flavours appear in the simpler butter bean velouté, a thick and creamy soup with rashers of smoked bacon. There’s a very pleasing dish of slow cooked pork cheek with a pork knuckle fritter, rolled and breaded to look like a Scotch egg, along with confit pork belly, celeriac purée and four slightly gaunt-looking potato croquettes. The special of the day is sea bream, a fine piece of fish with crisp skin, served on a bed of courgette and with a crab bisque. Its highlight is perhaps the topping: chubby pieces of crab ravioli.
Sitting halfway between a fine dining restaurant and a brasserie, 3 South Place has other things going for it too: a well-informed wine list with most wines available by the glass and carafe, knowledgeable staff and grown up house music seeping in from the bar next door that’s far superior to your average background muzak. Highly enjoyable.
