In June 1947 it was announced that British India would partition into two new nation states – India and Pakistan. Yet when the expected date of British withdrawal from India was brought forward a year, communications broke down and the violence that ensued proved catastrophic. Iqbal Husain (The National Archives), Mandeep Samra and Sonyia Jamal (Let’s Go Yorkshire), and A’Ishah Waheed (Patchwork Archivists) will speak and offer a space for questions and reflections on this momentous event in history. An accompanying display of records from our collection will include the voices of some of the key players, including Jinnah and Gandhi.
