Roman Dead

In 2017 a rare Roman sarcophagus was excavated from Harper Road in Southwark; a site that archaeological research has shown was part of a large Roman cemetery.

This remarkable find will now be on public display for the first time in a major new exhibition, Roman Dead, which opens at the Museum of London Docklands on 25th May 2018.

Displays look at funerary rituals and beliefs and different types of burial practices in London 2,000 years ago. Human remains will be on display in the form of skeletons (both buried and cremated), often alongside objects that were buried with them.
