February Half Term at The Postal Museum and Mail Rail

The Postal Museum, home of Mail Rail, has a jam-packed programme of activities lined up for families visiting during the February half term.

As well as taking a ride deep under London on a miniature train, visitors with kids aged 3 upwards can enjoy a whole host of activities – from drop-in arts and crafts workshops to storytelling by characters from the past – as they stroll through the museum's galleries. Activities will take place daily from Monday 12 February to Saturday 17 February and are open to children of all ages.

All activities are included in the ticket price (except for Sorted! only tickets) and available on a first come, first served basis – just pop along to take part!

What’s on?

· Monday 12 February, 11.30, 13.30 and 14.30 – The Legend of the Lioness (45 mins)

Join storyteller Olivia Armstrong for an immersive journey through curious tales of the postal past. During this 45-minute interactive storytelling session, you’ll meet an escaped lioness, a horse named Pomegranate and a postal cat.

· Tuesday 13 February, 11.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.00 – The Bear, the Toad and the Rabbit

An arts and crafts workshop inspired by the museum’s brand-new display of stamp design including original BFG artwork by Quentin Blake, Paddington Bear and Peter Rabbit. Little ones can choose from a key ring, badge or magnet and make their very own mini souvenir to take home.

· Wednesday 14 February, 11.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.00 – The Tibs Whiskers

Make a mask in the image of the famous Post Office cat, Tibs the Great, whose job it was to prowl the Post Office headquarters and scare off any mice considering making it their home.

· Thursday 15 February, 11.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.00 – Ani-Mail Art

Join artist and illustrator, Susie Foster, to make beautiful pop-up cards and illustrated envelopes. This artist-led children’s activity is inspired by stories of animal mischief and adventure from the museum. Children can take inspiration from a lioness escaped from a travelling menagerie, or Mr Poppleton’s horse, who once received an official sick note for his sore shoulders.

· Friday 16 February, 11.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.00 – Squeaking Squad

You might have heard about Tibs the Great, but what about the mice he used to patrol the Post Office headquarters looking for? Inspired by the book of Tibs the Post Office Cat, create a mouse hand puppet and join the Squeaking Squad!

· Saturday 17 February, 10.00-16.00 – Galleries Alive: Pike the Fearless

Meet Joseph Pike, fearless guard of the famous Quicksilver mail coach, and hear what happened when he encountered a fearsome escaped lioness on his route. Look out for his special pop-up performances throughout The Postal Museum exhibition!

A ride on The Postal Museum’s 100 year old railway, Mail Rail, that runs deep under London can also be added to the price of a ticket, however rides must be booked in advance online to avoid disappointment.
