Providing a moment of calm and reflection for the new year, NOW Gallery on Greenwich Peninsula welcomes Harmonics in Space by Fred Butler. Available for all to view for free from 28th February – 29th April 2018, Harmonics in Space will transform NOW Gallery into a destination for wellbeing, where visitors are invited to explore the energy of chromotherapy to find joy in light and colour. Starting in the dark winter months, this exhibition provides an uplifting relief from London’s winter landscape and takes us into the lightness of spring.

Harmonics in Space will see NOW Gallery metamorphose into a therapeutic and harmonious retreat. ‘Healing spheres’ will be a key feature of the installation – three dimensional sculptures that invite visitors to submerge their heads inside to experience a range of colourful lights. The benefit of this type of light and colour therapy enables an interplay between the conscious and unconscious levels of the psyche, stimulating the imagination and releasing creativity.

The significance of the sculptures of these shapes ties into Fred’s on-going interest in wellbeing. After studying Rudolf Laban’s theory of ‘Harmonics in Space’, which suggested the body is made up of polyhedral shapes – the smallest being a tetrahedron, located in the centre of the body. Constant deskwork and hunching over electronic devices causes the tetrahedron to become blocked. Harmonics in Space, will provide visitors with the opportunity to take a step back from everyday life and encourage those who visit to stand, breathe, move and expand their chests; engaging the whole body and allowing themselves to tap into the awareness of being alive.

As with shape, Fred believes that colour has a profound affect on moods, emotions and daily life. “We need a balance of all the colour vibrations in sunlight to nourish us energetically,” she says. “Colour is intrinsic to my practice and I want to use that tool to attract, inspire and excite a new audience to NOW Gallery making it a true destination with this playful installation.”

With the addition of a tactile floor and iridescent shimmer, guests will be transported on a journey to a meditative other-world. As part of their experience, visitors are invited to take the time to try their hand at origami, to create an exclusive colourful cosmic creature to match their moods. This element of the exhibition will provide visitors with the creative space to switch off, contemplate and make.

In keeping with the title and sensory theme of Harmonics in Space, sound is also principle to the exhibition. Soundtracks have always been integral to Fred’s work, from live presentations at London Fashion Week and fashion films made with Red Bull Studios, and the installation at NOW Gallery will be no different. Visitors will wear their own individual BEATS wireless headphones to hear unique uplifting music as a sonic journey through the exhibition. The sound experienced in this personal system will complete the 360-degree immersive experience.

Harmonics in Space is designed for visitors to focus on their self-care. The exhibition’s inclusiveness addresses Fred’s concern about humans becoming increasingly introverted and isolated in the digital world. Fred invites visitors to let go of the instant gratification from constant scrolling and over stimulation, which shortens attention span, and allow visitors to enjoy the moment, forget the past, avoid speculating on the future and be in the NOW.

“In the month of February heading into spring, NOW Gallery will become a space for all to dwell and experience radiating light in a tactile environment. Fred’s philosophy is one of engagement tying into her aesthetic so apparent in her design work, these two will combine into a playful environment for all” says Jemima Burrill Cultural Curator of NOW Gallery.
