The cream of Cornwall’s vibrant music and comedy scene is once again set to storm the annual celebration of Cornish contemporary culture, Kernow in the City in the heart of London’s Shoreditch on the nearest Saturday to Goel Pyran or St Piran’s Day. This popular event brings together the capital’s Cornish and Celtic communities, and curious Londoners alike to champion the best of Cornwall, fuelled by Skinner’s ale and pasties lovingly baked by Warren’s. This year’s Kernow in the City shines the spotlight on headliners, William the Conqueror whose grunge-filtered blues and roots has been picking up praise in far-flung corners from UK festivals to Nashville ever since acclaimed singer, Ruarri Joseph revealed his erstwhile secret alter-ego. Joining William the Conqueror on the bill will be Accidental Hero who hails from the rugged wilds of west Cornwall. Influenced by Donovan and James Taylor; Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake as well as 1930s Americana, the west coast surf movement of the 1960s and the English folk scene of the 1970s, Accidental Hero makes modern acoustic music with beautifully simple arrangements and production values that allow the song-writing to shine. Adding traditional Cornish dance music to the rich mix of talent on offer, Skillywidden’s bouzouki, fiddle, clarinets, viola and percussion combine in an exhilarating celebration of Cornwall’s indigenous culture that will undoubtedly pack the dancefloor. Mel Drew’s self-deprecating style of comedy takes you on a rollercoaster ride of more ridiculous situations than a 6 foot Cornish maid with size 9 feet could ever imagine. Poking fun at the many challenges life has thrown at her – a brain tumour and partial deafness among them – her dream of performing as a stand-up has already taken her on a tour of Kernow and across the Tamar to rave reviews. Shortlisted for the South of England finals of the UK Funny Women competition, this is your chance to catch her first London appearance.
