A pop-up 1920s speakeasy in a secret London venue lit by candles—this month with a Japanese twist, to celebrate the April festival of cherry blossom (sakura). In the 1920s the Japanese love of nature and tradition collided with a huge social shift—women suddenly had more freedom and the urban youth embraced Western fashion, Art Deco, jazz, drinking, smoking—to create a hybrid style, a distinctly Japanese Jazz Age.

For women the new look was the moga (short for modan gaaru, "modern girl"), a Japanese flapper, with an enthusiasm for jazz, cocktails and dancing with mobos (“modern boys”). We'll have bespoke mixology inspired by the Land of the Rising Sun, we'll have cherry blossom, Japanese gangster movies, dining and dancing to live music from the Waruli Otoko Swing Orchestra, plus cabaret from Champagne Charlie, and vintage DJs Holly France and Auntie Maureen.

DRESS: Like all Candlelight Club parties, smart 1920s costume is appreciated. If you feel like wearing something with a Japanese twist go for it, but standard Candlelight Club attire will be spot on too.
