Award-winning actor Rory Kinnear’s first play is a witty and heartfelt look at an ‘ordinary’ family with all the tensions and conflict that can mean.

It’s Andy Griffiths’ 21st birthday. The cake is baked and presents are wrapped. But Andy is severely disabled and spends most of his life in a care home. His mother Carol nervously awaits the guests.
As in all family dramas there are unexpected visitors who bring painful memories and awkward complications. The stage is set for ‘the fissions inside the nuclear family’ to explode.

The Herd debuted at the Bush Theatre, London, in September 2013 directed by Howard Davies, for which Kinnear went on to win the Critics’ Circle Most Promising Playwright Award 2014.

‘An accomplished debut… a vivid and unsentimental portrait of domestic life, flecked with wry humour’ – Evening Standard

‘Witty, agonising and eye-opening… a weave of painful insights and playful humour’ – Independent

‘Kinnear clearly understands the tensions of family life. [He is] good at exposing the fissions inside the nuclear family.’ – Guardian
