Londinium mortuum: walking the eastern cemetery

In this walk, meet the Roman Procurator who died in Londinium in AD 65, and the human and animal burials of the eastern cemetery, as we take in memorial structures, chalk burials, and consider why 100 frogs were ‘buried’ in the east.

Londinium mortuum is a series of walks that will explore the Roman cemeteries that sat just outside the walls of Londinium. Hear about some of the people that lived, and died, in Roman London – some pagan, some Christian and some decapitated! Along the way, learn about Roman funeral and burial practices, the relationship between the living and the dead, grave goods, inhumations and cremations, and archaeological excavations and finds.

This series is devised by London Town Tours and the Museum of London. Meeting point: Tower Hill Underground Station (main exit by Trinity Square Gardens).
